Birthday Tribute Convoy

生辰纲

The Birthday Tribute Convoy is the object at the center of “Outwitting the Birthday Convoy,” one of the most important early episodes in Water Margin. The term does not name a single fixed object. Here, gang means a shipment of valuables organized for transport.

The gold, pearls, and treasures are prepared by Liang Zhongshu of Daming Prefecture as a birthday gift for his father-in-law, Cai Jing. Their enormous value requires a guarded and secret journey to the capital. The convoy brings Yang Zhi, Chao Gai, Wu Yong, Gongsun Sheng, and the Ruan brothers together from otherwise separate lives.

Yang Zhi’s Escort

Fearing robbery, Liang Zhongshu chooses Yang Zhi to command the escort. Yang Zhi understands the danger and avoids a conspicuous military procession. He disguises the soldiers as ordinary merchants and takes less traveled roads.

But the weather is brutally hot, the men are exhausted, and Yang Zhi continually drives them forward. Tension inside the escort grows. The more fiercely he tries to guarantee security, the more isolated he becomes, creating an opening for Wu Yong’s plan.

Yellow Mud Ridge

Chao Gai, Wu Yong, Gongsun Sheng, Liu Tang, and the three Ruan brothers decide to take the convoy at Yellow Mud Ridge. They do not simply rush forward with blades.

The brilliance of the episode is that they persuade Yang Zhi that no danger is present. The group poses as date merchants resting by the road, while Bai Sheng appears as a wine seller. In the intense heat, the escort soldiers become desperate for a drink.

Yang Zhi remains suspicious, but he cannot see through the full deception. The wine is drugged, the escort loses the ability to resist, and the tribute is taken. The episode centers on strategy rather than force.

A Convoy That Changes Destinies

The consequences do not end with the theft. The investigation makes it impossible for Chao Gai and his companions to continue their former lives, and they eventually seek refuge at Liangshan. Yang Zhi loses his prospects again and moves further into the outlaw world.

The convoy is therefore a batch of goods that acts like a great narrative mechanism, pushing several separate lives into the central world of Water Margin.

Power and Wealth

The treasure also carries a clear story meaning. It is neither military pay nor relief for ordinary people, but an extraordinary private birthday gift from a regional power holder to the highest minister.

Chao Gai’s group can therefore frame the act as seizing ill-gotten wealth. The event reads as more than a robbery; it becomes a decisive step toward resistance against the existing order.

CG Visual Language

CG should not represent the Birthday Tribute Convoy as a single treasure chest. It is an entire shipment of valuables:

  • multiple loads of goods
  • chests and carrying cases
  • wrapped bundles
  • soldiers carrying shoulder poles
  • the disguise of ordinary merchants
  • a hot mountain road
  • the setting of Yellow Mud Ridge

For the outwitting scene, the key signs are loads of dates, a wine barrel, oppressive heat, an exhausted escort, and what appears to be an ordinary roadside exchange.

The visual power lies less in glittering treasure than in the fact that everyone appears to be an ordinary traveler while a carefully designed deception has already begun.
