Gongsun Sheng, nicknamed the “Dragon in the Clouds,” is one of the Liangshan heroes in Water Margin and a practitioner of powerful Daoist arts. He is part of the early circle around Chao Gai and Wu Yong and participates in the famous seizure of the Birthday Gifts.
After the robbery is exposed, Gongsun Sheng joins the others in fleeing to Liangshan. During the stronghold’s early development, he contributes not only to ordinary military operations but also to situations involving supernatural forces that conventional warriors cannot easily overcome.
A disciple of the Daoist master Luo Zhenren, Gongsun Sheng possesses abilities associated with ritual magic, weather, and spiritual combat. When Liangshan encounters enemies such as Gao Lian who employ supernatural techniques of their own, his presence becomes especially important. Dai Zong and Li Kui are among those sent to find him and persuade him to return.
Unlike many Liangshan heroes, Gongsun Sheng always retains a strong connection to religious withdrawal and the life beyond worldly ambition. Although he participates in the brotherhood’s campaigns, he ultimately leaves the path of military achievement and returns to the mountains to continue his Daoist cultivation.
