Fan Cheng is a young spear warrior who enters The Story of Yue Fei during the crisis at Zhuxian Town. He identifies himself as the brother-in-law of Meng Bangjie, an officer under Yue Fei, and rides to help the marshal against Jin Wuzhu. He is not summoned by a formal order. News that the Yue army is surrounded is enough to bring him from the road into the war.
Fan Cheng is under twenty, mounted on a red-maned horse and carrying a gold-inlaid spear. He first meets Di Lei, who is also seeking a way to join the battle, and then Guan Ling arrives. Faced with massed Jin troops and no clear entrance, Guan Ling proposes that they drive through the center. The three agree and force their way into the encirclement. The episode defines Fan Cheng through immediate choice: he accepts two new companions and enters a battle already raging for a day and a night.
In Yue Lei’s later northern campaign, Fan Cheng remains among the younger officers rather than disappearing after one rescue. Yue Lei places Lu Wenlong and Fan Cheng over the second division of three thousand soldiers, a command that establishes his standing as more than a wandering volunteer. He later joins Guan Ling, Lu Wenlong, Di Lei, Yan Chengfang, and Niu Tong in the great mounted fight against Wuzhu’s commanders. Fan Cheng has no claim to be the army’s foremost spear, but the novel repeatedly trusts him inside its strongest young formation.
