Green Dragon Crescent Blade

The Green Dragon Crescent Blade is Guan Yu’s legendary signature weapon. At the opening of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Yu has the blade made as the three sworn brothers prepare their weapons. Guan Yu’s fame made the blade legendary, while the blade became one of the clearest visual signs by which viewers recognize him.

It is first and foremost a great blade on a long shaft, not a magical treasure that depends on supernatural power. Its legendary force comes mainly from Guan Yu’s martial prowess and commanding presence, and from the status given to it over centuries of story and art.

How to Recognize It

Look for its overall silhouette: a long, straight shaft; a broad, single-edged blade; and a pronounced crescent curve sweeping upward. The blade head appears heavy and powerful. Refer to the image for its specific structure and decoration.

Guan Yu and the Blade

Guan Yu made the Green Dragon Crescent Blade famous, and the blade makes Guan Yu recognizable at a glance. In painting and sculpture, it acts almost like his “visual nameplate”: whether he is seated, standing, or on horseback, the long blade immediately signals his identity.

In Art

Guan Yu is the blade’s principal legendary bearer. Traditional images of Guandi sometimes show Zhou Cang standing nearby and carrying it; Zhou Cang is the weapon-bearing attendant, while the blade still points to Guan Yu. Guan Sheng, a later hero of Water Margin, echoes Guan Yu’s visual language through the great blade, long beard, and commanding martial presence.

History and Legend

There is no reliable evidence that the historical Guan Yu used a weapon of this exact form. In later legend and art, however, the Green Dragon Crescent Blade became his fixed visual emblem.
