Shen Gongbao

Shen Gongbao is the tireless recruiter of the Shang supernatural camp in Investiture of the Gods. Trained in the same broad Daoist world as Jiang Ziya but bitterly opposed to him, he travels from mountain to island persuading cultivators to leave seclusion and fight. His familiar call to a departing adept repeatedly turns a private grievance into a new battle for Xiqi.

He wins followers by questioning Jiang Ziya’s ability and promising honor under Shang. Zhao Gongming, the Three Xiao sisters, Ma Yuan, Yin Jiao, Yin Hong, and many Jie immortals enter disaster after contact with him, even when their teachers or companions advise restraint. Shen Gongbao also displays his own magic: he can sever his head, cast it through the air, and return it to his neck. He travels on a white-fronted tiger, carries a sword, and survives dangers that kill many of the fighters he has summoned.

In the Myriad Immortals Formation he sits on the Eight-Tiger Chariot and helps direct Tongtian’s assembled disciples. After the formation collapses, he attempts to escape on his tiger, but Yuanshi Tianzun has him seized. Shen Gongbao once swore that failure should condemn him to block the North Sea eye; the oath is enforced, and he is rolled in a mat and used to seal it. At the final investiture Jiang Ziya still names him General Who Divides the Waters. Persuasion, restless travel, tiger mount, and self-defeating oaths define an antagonist whose greatest weapon is often another person’s ambition.
