Tang Huai

汤怀

Tang Huai is one of the companions who grow up beside Yue Fei in The Story of Yue Fei. With Wang Gui and Zhang Xian he studies, practices arms, listens to heroic tales, and joins the youthful oath that precedes every later military rank. He travels with Yue Fei toward the examinations and shares the frustrations that push the friends from private ambition into service during a national crisis.

As Yue Fei rises, Tang Huai remains part of the old brotherhood inside the larger army. The novel does not give him the impossible strength of Gao Chong or a supernatural missile. His value is steadiness, shared history, and the willingness to take an order whose danger is obvious. When an imperial mission sends him through the lines, the Jin forces arrange to isolate him from any safe return. Once the envoy has gone, Tang Huai turns back toward an enemy camp stretching for many miles and attempts to cut his way out with a spear.

The text is blunt that his martial skill is ordinary compared with the mass surrounding him. Layer after layer of soldiers closes in and offers rank if he will surrender. Tang Huai refuses, declares that Yue Fei will one day sweep the invaders away, and calls a final farewell to his sworn elder brother and comrades. Rather than be captured and humiliated, he reverses the point of his own spear into his throat. His death supplies the measure that combat alone cannot: he is not the army’s greatest champion, but his loyalty does not collapse when prowess reaches its limit.
