Xu Maogong is an important strategist in the Sui–Tang heroic tradition and is associated in different storytelling traditions with the historical identity also known as Xu Shiji or Li Ji. He is remembered primarily for intelligence, planning, and his role as one of the major strategic minds among the Wagang heroes.
As the Wagang group gathers strength, Xu Maogong frequently analyzes military situations, develops plans, and helps coordinate the actions of the warriors around him. Fighters such as Qin Qiong and Cheng Yaojin provide direct martial force, while Xu Maogong contributes strategic direction.
As the Sui dynasty collapses and the alliances of the heroic world change, Xu Maogong eventually enters the Tang camp and continues to participate in warfare as an important commander and adviser.
Within the Sui–Tang narrative, Xu Maogong is not primarily defined by overwhelming personal combat. Instead, he complements warriors such as Qin Qiong and Cheng Yaojin and serves as an important bridge between the Wagang brotherhood and the military world of the emerging Tang dynasty.
