Yang Sen is one of the Four Saints of Nine Dragon Island. Together with Wang Mo, Gao Youqian, and Li Xingba, he accepts Wen Zhong’s invitation to support the Shang army against Xiqi.
His appearance is especially distinctive. The novel describes a lotus-seed headband, an arhat-like presentation, a dark robe, a face as black as the bottom of a pot, cinnabar-red whiskers, and two yellow eyebrows. Black skin, red beard, yellow brows, and dark clothing give him an immediate theatrical and divine-general quality.
The Suanni
Yang Sen rides a suanni. Together with Wang Mo’s bian, Gao Youqian’s spotted leopard, and Li Xingba’s zhengning, it completes the Four Saints’ formation of strange-beast cavalry.
Ordinary horses lose their strength when they encounter the beasts’ aura. Yang Sen’s fighting identity therefore comes from rider and mount acting together rather than from magical skill alone.
The Four Saints in Battle
The Four Saints enter the battlefield as a coordinated unit of mounted adepts. Each rides a different beast, and together they break the opposing cavalry’s order.
Yang Sen occupies the role of the dark-faced beast rider within that group.
Value as a Warrior Figure
Although Yang Sen wears an adept’s clothing, he does not remain behind the lines. He charges on the suanni, fights Xiqi’s champions at close range, and joins the pursuit with Wang Mo and the others.
