Qi Guoyuan

齐国远

Qi Guoyuan is a rough, comic-edged stronghold warrior in the Sui–Tang romance tradition, usually appearing beside Li Rugui. The pair belong to the wider Shandong fellowship that gathers around Qin Qiong and eventually serves the Wagang cause. Qi is not counted among the supreme ranked champions, but he has his own men, carries the authority of a small chieftain, and repeatedly joins the larger brotherhood when collective action matters.

The Copper Flag Formation gives him a clear military assignment. Xu Maogong divides the heroes among four approaches to the array and orders Qi Guoyuan and Li Rugui to lead one thousand troops through the southern side. They must occupy guards and survive ropes, caltrops, pits, and arrow fire while Qin Qiong drives toward the central flag. Their assault works with the attacks of Wang Bodang, Xie Yingdeng, Yuchi Nan, Yuchi Bei, Shi Danai, and Zhang Gongjin until Qin Qiong brings the great flag down.

Popular tellings often place a gold-backed saber in Qi Guoyuan’s hands, but his real weight comes from companionship and persistence rather than an unmatched weapon. He is a recognizable supporting captain among men whose reputations are larger than his own. Later sequel traditions carry him into Tang expeditionary service, where his impulsive courage can become dangerous against champions beyond his level. That contrast is part of his appeal: Qi Guoyuan is brave enough to enter the same formations as the great heroes, even when the story never pretends that he equals them.
