Xie Yingdeng

Xie Yingdeng is a mounted archer and Wagang warrior in the Sui–Tang romance tradition. He belongs to the circle around Wang Bodang, Qin Qiong, and the heroes who meet through the roads, estates, and outlaw strongholds of Shandong. Bow, horse, and quick movement define his fighting method: he supports larger actions by controlling distance rather than relying on the heavy weapons used by the foremost champions.

Early in the story he and Wang Bodang help connect Qin Qiong with the wider fellowship of heroes. When official forces move against Qin’s household and the sworn companions break prisoners and families out of Licheng, Xie Yingdeng joins the operation while Wang Bodang, Shan Xiongxin, and the others block pursuit. He then follows the Wagang cause as it grows from scattered friendships into an army.

During the assault on the Copper-Flag Formation, Xu Maogong assigns Xie Yingdeng and Wang Bodang a thousand troops and orders them to enter from the east. Their attack forms one arm of a four-sided advance while Qin Qiong drives at the center. Later storytelling sometimes gives Xie Yingdeng a withdrawal into religious life, but his principal martial image remains the alert rider with bow and arrows, fighting beside familiar Wagang companions.
