Chai Jin, nicknamed the “Little Whirlwind,” is one of the heroes of Water Margin and a descendant of the imperial Chai family of the Later Zhou dynasty. Because his ancestors had surrendered the throne peacefully, the Chai household retained unusual privileges. Wealthy and generous, Chai Jin became famous for welcoming wandering heroes and sheltering men who had fallen into trouble.
Lin Chong received Chai Jin’s hospitality while being escorted toward Cangzhou, and Wu Song also stayed at his estate during a difficult period of his life. Long before Chai Jin formally joined Liangshan, his generosity had already connected him with many of the men who would later gather there.
His own fortunes changed when his uncle Chai Huangcheng became involved in a dispute with relatives of the powerful Gao Lian. Chai Jin was arrested and imprisoned, prompting the Liangshan forces to attack Gaotangzhou and rescue him. Afterward, he joined Liangshan and became one of the 108 heroes.
Following the imperial amnesty, Chai Jin took part in Liangshan’s military campaigns and later played a role in the war against Fang La, including dangerous work behind enemy lines. After the campaigns ended, he eventually withdrew from official life and returned home. Among the Liangshan heroes, Chai Jin stands apart as both a generous patron of the martial world and a bridge between wandering outlaws and elite society.
