The Chan tradition is one of the great supernatural factions of Investiture of the Gods. Centered on Yuanshi Tianzun, it connects the immortal world of Kunlun with Jiang Ziya, Xiqi, and many of the young divine warriors who fight for Zhou.
Jiang Ziya begins as a cultivator on Kunlun Mountain. When Yuanshi Tianzun orders him to descend into the mortal world, assist Xiqi, and carry out the work of Investiture, the Chan network gradually becomes entangled in the great war.
Yuanshi Tianzun’s lineage includes the Twelve Golden Immortals and other powerful masters, many of whom have disciples of their own. Taiyi Zhenren trains Nezha. Yuding Zhenren trains Erlang Shen. Qingxu Daode Zhenjun is the master of Huang Tianhua, while Puxian Zhenren is closely connected with Mu Zha.
When these younger disciples descend from the mountains, they become some of the most brilliant supernatural warriors in the Xiqi camp. Whenever they encounter an enemy, magical treasure, or formation beyond their ability to defeat, the masters behind them are gradually drawn into the conflict as well.
This creates one of the characteristic patterns of the Investiture story. A battle may begin between mortal generals. When ordinary warriors fail, extraordinary adepts enter the field. When those adepts encounter stronger treasures or techniques, their masters are summoned. Behind those masters stand still greater immortals.
Step by step, what begins as a war between Shang and Zhou expands until entire supernatural lineages are involved.
Within Celestial Generals, the Chan tradition is therefore most useful as a legendary faction and network hub. It connects Yuanshi Tianzun, Jiang Ziya, Nezha, Erlang Shen, and a large web of masters and disciples, while helping explain why new immortals and divine warriors repeatedly descend to aid Xiqi whenever the struggle reaches another crisis.
