Duobao Daoist

多宝道人

Duobao Daoist stands at the head of Tongtian’s senior disciples in Investiture of the Gods. He is also the teacher of Fire Spirit Sacred Mother, so her death at Guangchengzi’s hands makes the widening conflict personal as well as sectarian. When Guangchengzi returns her Golden Mist Crown to Biyou Palace, the anger of Duobao and the other disciples helps turn an argument over one death into the open breach between Jie and Chan.

Tongtian later orders Duobao to carry the four great swords to Jiepai Pass and arrange the Immortal-Slaying Formation. This responsibility shows his rank more clearly than any boast: the most feared formation in the novel depends on swords placed under his supervision. When Tongtian enters the array, Duobao and the other upper disciples stand directly beneath their master, while thousands of followers gather behind them.

During the battle, Laozi’s manifestation strikes Tongtian with a staff. Duobao cannot endure seeing his teacher humiliated. He rushes from the platform with a sword and challenges his senior uncle, openly choosing loyalty over caution. Laozi blocks him and casts the Wind-Fire Cushion; a Yellow-Turbaned Strongman rolls Duobao away and carries him to Xuandu. The capture ends his active part in the war. The novel hints at a later western destiny, but within this story his completed arc is that of the foremost disciple who prepares Tongtian’s decisive array and is removed while defending him.
