Jiao Zan

Jiao Zan is a fierce field officer in Generals of the Yang Family, remembered together with Meng Liang as one of the rough veterans who carry out the Yang commanders’ most dangerous orders. He first appears as a powerful outlaw who challenges Yang Yanzhao. Defeat does not end his story: Yanzhao recognizes his courage, brings him into service, and turns an unruly fighter into a loyal member of the household army.

His temper repeatedly drives the action. During the dispute over the Tianbo Tower, Jiao Zan and Meng Liang kill the arrogant Xie Jinwu and are forced into flight before the Yang family retrieves them. In later campaigning against Wang Qiang, Jiao Zan breaks through the enemy and kills Liu Ke in a single bout. He and Meng Liang are then placed on the wings of the Yang formation, a pairing that shows their value as aggressive supporting commanders rather than independent marshals.

Jiao Zan also takes part in the assault on the Tianmen Formation, entering the enemy’s ritual defenses under disguise and fighting through the larger Yang campaign. His end is inseparable from Meng Liang’s. While trying to recover the remains of Yang Jiye, misunderstanding and haste bring the two companions to death. The conclusion gives his bluster a tragic weight: the same impatient loyalty that makes him useful in battle also carries him into the final disaster.
