Meng Liang is the rough axe-bearing officer of the Yang family army in Generals of the Yang Family. He serves Yang Yanzhao and is repeatedly paired with Jiao Zan, another direct and hot-tempered field warrior. Meng Liang is suited to mountain paths, night movement, and close fighting rather than court ceremony; armor, a broad axe, and the practical gear of a campaigning soldier define him.
In the Tianmen Formation cycle, Meng Liang carries messages, seeks outside aid, and undertakes dangerous journeys needed before the great array can be broken. He travels toward Mount Wutai to find Yang Wulang and is associated with missions to obtain the materials or help required by the Yang commanders. Such errands are not passive service: they demand that he cross enemy country, fight through resistance, and return with something the main army cannot secure from its own camp.
His most tragic episode comes during the attempt to recover Yang Jiye’s remains from Hongyang Cave. Jiao Zan secretly follows, hoping to share the deed; in the darkness Meng Liang mistakes his companion for an enemy and kills him. On discovering the error, he takes his own life. The two warriors who had so often formed a pair are therefore destroyed by the same loyalty and haste that carried them into danger. Axe, torchlight, cave stone, and the shock of recognition shape Meng Liang’s final image.
