Yuchi Nan

尉迟南

Yuchi Nan is a warrior of the Sui–Tang romance fellowship, most often named together with Yuchi Bei. The paired names make the two men memorable among the many companions who gather around Wagang, but they are not copies of the far more famous Yuchi Gong. Yuchi Nan’s place is that of a dependable secondary officer who appears when the scattered heroes have become an army and must carry out coordinated commands.

His clearest action comes in the Copper Flag Formation campaign. The formation is protected by linked arrays, hidden ropes, caltrops, pits, and archers around a great central flag. Xu Maogong divides the attack by direction: Wang Bodang and Xie Yingdeng enter from the east, Qi Guoyuan and Li Rugui from the south, Shi Danai and Zhang Gongjin from the north, while Yuchi Nan and Yuchi Bei lead one thousand troops into the west. Qin Qiong strikes through the center and brings down the flag as every wing presses inward.

Yuchi Nan does not receive the impossible strength or single-combat fame granted to the leading ranked heroes. His standing is instead shown by assignment. He and Yuchi Bei are trusted to hold an entire approach in a battle where failure on one side could leave Qin Qiong trapped inside the mechanisms. Later romance material places him among the old companions who receive military office under Tang rule. He therefore belongs to the durable middle rank of the fellowship: not its greatest champion, but one of the officers who make a complex victory possible.
