Yang Paifeng is the fire-tending girl who becomes a woman warrior in later Generals of the Yang Family storytelling. Raised within the Yang household, she learns from the movements and discipline around its soldiers while working near the great kitchen hearth. Her plain iron fire poker becomes a long staff in her hands, carrying a domestic tool into the same military world as the family’s spears and swords.
Her best-known test pits her against the rough veteran Jiao Zan. Paifeng refuses to be dismissed as a servant, meets his strength with leverage and quick staff work, and proves that the weapon used to stir the furnace can also control distance in a fight. The contest convinces She Saihua and the Yang commanders that she can be trusted beyond the household. Later stage and storytelling branches send her with the family women into frontier emergencies, sometimes pairing her with Meng Liang and Jiao Zan in relief actions.
Versions differ over the exact campaign, opponent, and costume, so the stable core matters most: Paifeng rises through demonstrated skill, remains loyal to the Yang women, and fights with the implement tied to her former work. Soot-darkened working clothes, a practical warrior’s jacket, and the straight iron poker tell that story without inventing a jeweled weapon or noble birth. Her change is social as well as martial—from the hearth’s edge to a place in the marching household.
