Zhang Xian is an important commander under Yue Fei in The Story of Yue Fei and one of the central officers of the Yue Family Army. He follows Yue Fei through years of campaigning and is remembered for loyalty, courage, and reliability in battle.
As Yue Fei’s forces expand their war against the Jin armies, Zhang Xian serves alongside commanders such as Yue Yun and Niu Gao. He participates in the continuing struggle against the forces of Jin Wuzhu and becomes part of the core group of warriors associated with the Yue Family Army’s northern campaigns.
When Yue Fei is later targeted by Qin Hui and his allies, Zhang Xian is drawn into the political persecution surrounding his commander. He is arrested and pressured in an effort to manufacture evidence against Yue Fei, but the accusations fail to produce the proof their architects seek.
Zhang Xian is ultimately killed together with Yue Fei and Yue Yun. His place in the story therefore extends beyond his military career: he becomes one of the central figures in the final tragedy of the Yue Family Army, remembered for remaining loyal to Yue Fei through its destruction.
