Guanyin is the principal organizer and recurring rescuer of the pilgrimage in Journey to the West. Acting on Tathagata Buddha’s command, she travels east to find a scripture seeker and recruits the dragon prince, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Sun Wukong along the route. She later identifies Tang Seng as the pilgrim and gives him the robe, staff, and means to discipline dangerous protectors.
The golden fillet and Tightening Spell bind Wukong to his responsibility after he kills bandits and tries to leave. Guanyin does not simply command from afar: she recovers the stolen cassock and takes the Black Bear Demon as a guardian, revives Zhenyuan Daxian’s ginseng-fruit tree with dew from her purifying vase, and subdues Red Boy with the lotus throne and five fillets, making him the Child of Good Fortune.
At the River That Reaches Heaven she catches her escaped goldfish, the King of Spiritual Touch, in a fish basket. Her willow branch and vase signify healing and control of water, while disciple Muzha often travels at her side. Because many ordeals arise from beings linked to celestial households, Guanyin repeatedly identifies origins, negotiates surrender, and restores the road rather than merely defeating enemies.
