Niu Tong

牛通

Niu Tong is the son of Niu Gao and one of the younger cavalry warriors in the later part of The Story of Yue Fei. He inherits his father’s blunt courage and physical force, but enters a different army, formed around Yue Lei and the children or disciples of the earlier Yue commanders. From the start he behaves as an active fighter rather than a ceremonial heir, carrying a saber and testing strangers quickly.

At Jinnan Pass he meets Shi Luanying, an armored woman general skilled with spear and thrown stone ingots. Their contest sets Niu Tong’s forceful saber work against her reach and missile attack; later developments turn battlefield opposition into alliance and marriage. The episode gives him a personal thread beyond his father’s reputation and places him among several young warriors whose first meetings begin as duels before shared loyalties become clear.

Niu Tong then rides with Yue Lei, Guan Ling, Lu Wenlong, Yue Ting, Di Lei, and their companions in the northern campaign. He confronts Jin troops and takes part in the renewed struggle against Wuzhu’s commanders. A solid young rider, practical saber, heavy brows, and direct forward posture echo Niu Gao without copying the older man’s paired maces or comic scenes. His purpose is to carry the Niu family’s rough battlefield energy into the unfinished war of the next generation.
